Investigations in the Topology Optimization of Continua

The use of topology optimization in continua is of theoretical and practical interest. When coupled with the finite element method it becomes a powerful computational tool.

An existing optimization program has been extended to include some modern finite element technology and to take advantage of the available computer power. A mesh generator has been modified to provide a preprocessor for the optimization program. Together with a postprocessor, the mesh generator and optimization module form the PLATO optimization system.

Using this system, a number of investigations have been made. These investigations have resulted in independent verification of come of the features of topology optimization, and have uncovered some interesting effects also. A set of three benchmarks has been developed with the Institut für Baustatik, Universtät Stuttgart, Germany. These benchmarks have been used also to gain a better insight into topology optimization, to verify and examine certain features of the methods employed, and to demonstrate the possibilities presented by topology optimization.
